Next, the question: "Question: From milk to ghee, they are equally called complete": this asks in terms of the five flavors. Because the preceding explanation stated that the Vaipulya, Prajñā, and the present sūtra all penetrate the complete principle, in that case, with the exception of the Tripiṭaka, all are called complete; since their meaning is confused, how is this resolved? The intent of the answer is: although the name "complete" is the same, they are not without distinctions; therefore, the metaphor of the four boats is made to explain the metaphor of the five flavors. Among the four boats, three are official and one is private; although they are equally called official, they are not without distinctions. The gates of teaching are also like this: although the Shared is called complete, the place it penetrates to is near, like reaching an islet; the Separate and Perfect penetrate far, like reaching the other shore. If one distinguishes the teaching-path, the Separate reaches the other shore by a circuitous path; only the official boat of the Perfect Teaching is called going directly. Although they are equally called official, since the place penetrated is near and the teaching-paths differ, what prevents them from being equally complete while their completions differ?
