The doctrinal meaning of our lineage maintains that the two texts share the same flavor, yet the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] is still inferior. Why? The Lotus opening the provisional is like having already broken the main enemy host; the remaining capacities arriving there are like remnants, presenting no difficulty. Hence the Lotus is regarded as the great harvest, and the Nirvāṇa is regarded as the gleaning. If this were not so, the Nirvāṇa should not point back from afar to the eight thousand śrāvakas receiving their predictions in the Lotus and seeing the Tathāgata nature, which is like the autumn harvest and winter storage with nothing more to be done.
