Regarding contemplation of the sense bases and elements: Whenever one speaks of an ocean, though it is deep and vast, it still has this shore and that shore; it is merely a small body of water. If, after the eye sees form, one develops affection, defiled attachment, covetousness, and delight, and gives rise to bodily, verbal, and mental karmas, this is the great ocean that drowns all devas, humans, and asuras in the world. One should know that the eye is the great ocean, form is the billowing waves, loving this form is the whirlpool, giving rise to unwholesome thoughts within it is the vicious fish and dragons, giving rise to jealousy and harm is the male rākṣasa, giving rise to defiled love is the female ghost, and initiating actions of body, speech, and mind is drinking salt water and drowning oneself. This is ignorance regarding eye and form giving rise to nescience and craving; because craving arises, it is called volitional formations; because volitional formations arise, they are called karma; karma binds consciousness to enter the intermediate existence, which is the arising of consciousness. When receiving the womb and the five vesicles have not yet formed, this is the arising of name-and-form; once the five vesicles are formed, it is called the arising of the six sense bases; when the six sense bases cannot yet distinguish suffering from pleasure, it is called the arising of contact; distinguishing suffering from pleasure is called the arising of feeling; giving rise to defilement toward sensory dusts is called the arising of craving; racing in all directions seeking is called the arising of grasping; creating bodily, verbal, and mental actions is called the arising of becoming; being destined to receive future five aggregates is called the arising of birth; changes in future aggregates are called the arising of aging; the destruction of future aggregates is called the arising of death; inner heat in the mind is called the arising of sorrow; crying out aloud is called the arising of lamentation; and emaciation and trembling of body and mind are called the arising of suffering and distress. This is called: when the eye sees form, there arises the great mass of suffering of the twelve links of dependent origination across the three times, not non-arising. The ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind, the eye element up to the dharma element, are also like this. This is the arising of sense bases and elements, not non-arising.
