Regarding gestation: his father was named Upatiṣya, who had mastered the classics; he wrapped his belly in iron plates, wore a crown of fire on his head, walked alone through Rājagṛha beating the drum of debate; the state preceptor Mathara, knowing his own teachings were outmoded and his physiognomy inauspicious, was defeated in debate, stripped of his fief, and gave him his daughter in marriage. His wife dreamed of a person wearing armor and carrying a vajra pestle, shattering all mountains and then standing beside one mountain. Awakening from the dream, her body felt heavy; she asked her husband, and the husband said: "The one you carry will defeat all debaters, only failing to defeat one person, whose disciple he shall become." Her brother was named Kauṣṭhila; in debate he had always defeated his elder sister, but once she was pregnant with this wise man, she defeated her younger brother in debate. The younger brother thought to himself: "This is not my sister's ability; she must be carrying a wise man whose eloquence is borrowed through the mother's mouth. If it is already like this in the womb, how much more so once he is born?" Abandoning his home, he traveled widely to study, not having time to clip his nails; people of the time called him the Long-Nail Renunciant (and so forth).
