1.137

本迹者，本住實相智度為母，從境生智慧，境即是身，智慧即是子；悲愍眾生，迹為五味。身子欲轉煩惱惡血令成善乳，示為外道智慧，作大論師；欲烹乳為酪，示三藏智慧，為第二世尊；欲引酪為生蘇，訥大現小，受淨名之屈；欲引生蘇為熟蘇，安慰饒益同梵行者，於般若領教；欲引熟蘇為醍醐，於法華初悟，斯皆迹中外現，而本地內祕其實久矣。

Regarding origin and traces: Originally dwelling in the mother of the wisdom of the real mark (prajñāpāramitā), from the object of contemplation wisdom is born; the object is the body (śarīra), and wisdom is the son (putra). Feeling compassion for sentient beings, he traces himself as the five flavours. Wishing to transform the evil blood of afflictions into good milk, Śāriputra manifested as the wisdom of the non-Buddhists, acting as a great master of debate; wishing to boil milk into curds, he manifested the wisdom of the Tripiṭaka, serving as the second World-Honoured One; wishing to draw curds into raw butter, he kept silent on the great and manifested the small, enduring the humiliation from Vimalakīrti; wishing to draw raw butter into clarified butter, comforting and benefiting fellow practitioners of the holy life, he received the teaching in the Prajñāpāramitā; wishing to draw clarified butter into ghee, he attained initial awakening in the Lotus Sūtra. These are all outward manifestations within the traces, whereas in his original ground, his real nature has long been kept secret within.
