"Nanda and Upananda" were brothers living in the ocean at the foot of Mount Sumeru. The Buddha often flew through the air up to the Trāyastriṃśa Palace. These dragons became angry and resentful: "How can bald-headed men pass above us?" Later, when the Buddha wished to ascend to the heavens, these dragons spewed forth black clouds and dark fog, concealing and obscuring the three luminaries. The monks all wished to subdue them, but the Buddha would not permit it. Maudgalyāyana said: "I can subdue these dragons." The dragons coiled their bodies around Sumeru seven times, their tails stirring up the ocean waters and their heads resting on the mountain peak. Maudgalyāyana manifested a body twice as large, coiling around the mountain fourteen times, his tail extending beyond the ocean and his head resting in the Brahma Palace. These dragons grew furiously angry and rained down vajra sand; Maudgalyāyana transformed the sand into precious flowers, soft, light, and lovely. Still their anger did not cease. Maudgalyāyana then transformed into a minute body and entered inside the dragons' bodies, entering through the eyes and exiting through the ears, entering through the ears and exiting through the nostrils, boring into and biting their bodies, so that they suffered severe pain, whereupon their minds were subdued. Maudgalyāyana then retracted his giant and minute bodies, manifested the form of a śramaṇa, and brought the two dragons to the Buddha's place. Devadatta led away five hundred monks as his own followers. Maudgalyāyana cast a spell of torpor over them, causing them to fall into a deep sleep, snoring like thunder and passing wind with loud noises; Kokālika kicked them with his feet, yet they still did not awaken. Śāriputra preached the Dharma and turned the minds of the five hundred people, and Maudgalyāyana carried them back with his hands, so that the Saṅgha was reconciled.
