約教論義者，依無常、苦、空、無我，破斷常見等，是初教論義。依空、無所有、不可得，破斷常愛見者，通教論義，故天女云：「我無所得故辯如此。」依總持四辯，觀機照假以藥逗病，破斷常見者，是別教論義相。依實相畢竟不有不無，破斷常見者，是圓教論義。

Regarding debate according to the teachings: refuting eternalism, annihilationism, and the like in reliance on impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and non-self constitutes the debate of the initial teaching. Refuting views of annihilation, eternity, and craving in reliance on emptiness, nothingness, and unobtainability constitutes the debate of the shared teaching; thus the heavenly maiden said, "Because I have nothing obtained, my eloquence is thus." Relying on the dhāraṇīs and four unhindered eloquences, observing capacities, discerning the provisional, and applying medicine to fit the illness to refute views of annihilation and eternity constitutes the characteristic of debate in the distinctive teaching. Refuting views of annihilation and eternity in reliance on the ultimate neither-existence-nor-non-existence of the real mark constitutes the debate of the perfect teaching.
