From "addressed the Buddha" downward is the second [part], vowing to encourage embarking. The text has two [parts]: first, protecting persons; second, protecting the Dharma. Protecting persons has six [aspects]: First, warding off their external difficulties. At first, generally warding off their difficulties, hence saying "causing none who spy to seek and gain an advantage." Next, specifically warding off their difficulties, citing the twelve improper [entities]. Second, teaching them internal dharmas: in all there are three rounds of instruction. First, while walking, standing, and reciting, he rides a six-tusked white elephant to comfort their minds. Next, while sitting and contemplating, he again rides the six-tusked [elephant] to instruct them in the sūtra and grant them samādhi. "Dhāraṇī" is turning from the provisional to enter emptiness; "hundreds of thousands of turnings" is turning from emptiness to emerge into the provisional; "expedient means" is that both serve as the path of expedient means to gain entry into the Middle Way, paramārtha-satya. Later, with single-minded vigor for three times seven days, he again rides the six-tusked [elephant] to instruct, benefit, and gladden them and expound the dhāraṇī, as in the text. Third, covering them with divine power: whether hearing or upholding, none is without divine power, as in the text. Fourth, demonstrating the superior causes: if one can be [any of] the five kinds of dharma teachers, one has been planted, matured, and liberated by the buddhas of the three periods. This person attains liberation together with the future buddhas, hence it says "shares in Samantabhadra's practices." This person has already planted goodness with past buddhas, hence it says "has deeply planted good roots." This person is matured by the present Buddha, hence it says "strokes their head with his hand." Fifth, demonstrating the proximate effects: merely being able to copy [it] leads proximately to Trāyastriṃśa; having all five kinds of dharma teachers leads next to Tuṣita, as in the text. Sixth, general conclusion: from "therefore, wise one" downward is this.
