「彌勒」者，此云慈氏。《思益》云：「若眾生見者，即得慈心三昧，故名慈氏。」《賢愚》云：「國王見象師調象，即慈心生，從是得名慈氏。」《悲花》云：「發願於刀火劫中擁護眾生。」

'Maitreya': translated here as the Benevolent One. The Siyi jing says: 'If sentient beings see him, they immediately attain the samādhi of a benevolent mind; therefore he is named the Benevolent One.' The Xianyu jing says: 'A king saw an elephant trainer tame an elephant and immediately gave rise to a benevolent mind; from this he acquired the name Benevolent One.' The Beihua jing says: 'He made a vow to protect and guard sentient beings during kalpas of swords and fire.'
