Next are listed the humans. "Vaidehī" is the mother, translated as "Reflection". Bimbisāra is translated here as "Model of Truth", the father. "Ajātaśatru" means "unborn enemy", or he is called Varruci, translated here as "fingerless". Those in his inner circle, wishing to protect him, called him Sujāta ("Fair-looking"): the name Sujāta belongs to the origin, while the designation "fingerless" manifests the traces. The Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra says: "Ajāta means unborn, and śatru means enemy." Because the buddha-nature is unborn, the enemies of defilements arise; because the enemies of defilements arise, one does not see the buddha-nature; when defilements do not arise, one sees the buddha-nature. Moreover, ajāta means unborn, and śatru means worldly phenomena (loka-dharma); because he is not defiled by the eight worldly phenomena, he is therefore named Ajātaśatru. This is the meaning of the origin. The Puchao jing says: "Ajātaśatru repented before Mañjuśrī and attained compliant forbearance. Upon the end of his life, he entered the Piṇḍola Hell; immediately upon entering, he immediately departed, and was reborn in a buddha land above, attaining the forbearance of non-arising. When Maitreya appears, he will return to this realm, named Bodhisattva Immovable, and will later become a buddha named Tathāgata Pure Realm." Since his traces are like this, how could his origin be measured? When the Lotus Sūtra was preached, he participated in the pure assembly; yet when it came to the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra, he was adduced as one guilty of heinous sins. How is this different from Kāśyapa receiving prediction in the Lotus Sūtra, yet in the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra being incapable of receiving the entrustment? One must not be blinded by the traces and remain confused about their origin.
