Heavenly flowers delight the eyes, and the shaking of the earth vibrates the mind. The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says: "When it shakes, it can cause the minds of sentient beings to be moved." The flowers and the earth are external omens; the heart's joy is an internal omen. It was an extraordinary joy; although they had experienced [joy] in the past, they were not moved by joy, but were able single-mindedly to contemplate the Buddha. How could it not be an auspicious omen? If one says that joy moves the mind of the skandhas, that is the meaning of humans and devas; if joy moves the uncontaminated mind of the real truth, that is the meaning of the Tripiṭaka and shared [teachings]; if joy moves the mind that is identical to provisionality, that is the distinctive meaning; if joy moves the mind of the true nature of reality, that is the perfect meaning.
