“Subhūti” is translated here as “Born of Emptiness.” At his birth, all the storehouses, baskets, boxes, and vessels in his home were completely empty. When a diviner was consulted, the diviner said it was auspicious. Because he was born upon emptiness, he was given the style “Born of Emptiness” (Subhūti). The principal retribution was named based on the auspicious emptiness of the vessels of circumstantial retribution; since both circumstantial and principal retribution were auspicious, he was called “Born of Emptiness.” Because he constantly practiced the conduct of emptiness, he was called “Good Action” (Subhūti). Because anyone who made offerings to him obtained immediate retribution, he was called “Good and Auspicious” (Subhūti). He always delighted in roaming and residing in tranquil forests, stone caves, and quiet places; his practice took emptiness as its root. He constantly entered the concentration of emptiness, dwelt in the samādhi of non-dispute, delighted in speaking on the dharma of emptiness, and whenever he had explanations and debates, he distinguished emptiness. Protecting sentient beings so as not to cause them obstruction, if they disliked his walking, he stopped; if they disliked his stopping, he walked. When the Buddha descended from Trāyastriṃśa, the people of the whole land gathered together like spokes at a hub, vying to step forward and pay homage; [Subhūti] sat upright in a stone chamber contemplating the emptiness of all phenomena: form is not the Buddha, up to consciousness is not the Buddha; the eye is not the Buddha, up to the mind is not the Buddha; and he suddenly awakened to the Way. The Buddha said to the nun Utpalavarṇā: “It was not you who first paid homage; you paid homage to my form body. Subhūti earlier saw my Dharma body.”
