3.46

料簡者，初番釋者是體外方便，化物之權隨他意語；次釋亦是體外方便，自行化他之權，亦是隨自他意語；後釋是同體方便，即是自行權、隨自意語。初釋方便，非能入、非所入；次釋方便，是能入、非所入；後釋方便，是所入、非能入，故知名同，其義大異，世人多不見此意，浪釋「方便品」（云云）。

As for the critical evaluation: the first explanation represents expedients external to the essence, the expedient of converting beings, words following the minds of others. The second explanation is also an expedient external to the essence, an expedient of one's own practice and converting others, and also words following both one's own and others' minds. The latter explanation represents the expedient of identical essence, which is precisely the expedient of one's own practice, words following one's own mind. In the first explanation, expedient means is neither that which can enter nor that which is entered; in the second explanation, expedient means is that which can enter, not that which is entered; in the latter explanation, expedient means is that which is entered, not that which can enter. Therefore we know that although the name is identical, its meaning is vastly different. People of the world mostly do not understand this meaning, and explain the 'Expedient Means Chapter' wildly, and so on.
