Ordinary people produce desire regarding the face, which can generate clinging and pleasure, and then spreads through the whole body. Furthermore, of the nine places that discharge filth, the face has seven orifices; using impurity to remedy desire, mindfulness is therefore fastened at the face (first explanation). Furthermore, the six consciousnesses are at the face, and the mind mostly conditions upward; this represents that all worthies and āryas esteem emptiness and correspond with emptiness, so mindfulness is fastened at the face (second explanation). Furthermore, if one contemplates the face, one can distinguish the six consciousnesses; for the sake of differentiation, mindfulness is fastened at the face (third explanation). Furthermore, the body has six parts, and the head and face are the most prominent; this represents that among all dharmas the real mark is foremost; because it is the foremost dharma, mindfulness is fastened at the face (fourth explanation).
