Third, in terms of separation and integration: if contemplated within the Buddha's mind, the ten realms and the ten suchnesses are all the unsurpassed characteristics up to the unsurpassed retribution, being solely the One Buddha-dharma realm—just as the ocean gathers all myriad streams, or as a thousand carriages share one track. This is the expedient and the real of [the Buddha's] own practice. If adapted to the minds of others, then there are the characteristics and natures of the nine dharma realms and the ten suchnesses; these are the expedient and the real for converting others. Although converting others also has the real, it is entirely subsumed under the expedient; although one's own practice also has the expedient, it is entirely subsumed under the real. These are the expedient and the real of one's own practice and converting others. Adapting to others entails opening; adapting to oneself entails integrating. Pervasively illuminating across breadth and depth, opening and integrating are completely unimpeded: though opened into the immeasurable, the immeasurable is one; though integrated into one, the one is immeasurable. Though immeasurable and one, they are neither one nor immeasurable; though neither one nor immeasurable, they are yet one and yet immeasurable. Only a Buddha together with a Buddha can exhaustively fathom this. Common people slander and do not believe it; followers of the two vehicles are bewildered and do not accept it; bodhisattvas are hindered by dust-like ignorance and have not yet clearly understood it. For this reason, [the Buddha] stopped, stopped, and cut off speech (and so on).
