4.10

復次約初品無明三重，覆初住中道，若初法說，上根之人三重無明一時俱盡，開佛知見入菩薩位，得菩提記；中根斷二重無明；下根斷一重。次譬說時，中根斷第三重盡，開佛知見入菩薩位得授記莂；下根進斷二重。次聞因緣說，下根斷三重盡，開佛知見入菩薩位也。例如小乘十六心未滿不得名初果，十六心滿名須陀洹也。

Furthermore, in terms of the three layers of the first grade of ignorance that obscure the middle way of the first abode: at the initial preaching by Dharma, for people of superior capacity the three layers of ignorance are extinguished all at once; opening the buddha knowledge and vision, they enter the bodhisattva stages and receive the prophecy of bodhi. Those of middling capacity sever two layers of ignorance; those of inferior capacity sever one layer. Next, at the time of the preaching by parables, those of middling capacity completely sever the third layer, open the buddha knowledge and vision, enter the bodhisattva stages, and receive the prophecy; those of inferior capacity advance to sever two layers. Next, upon hearing the preaching by causal conditions, those of inferior capacity completely sever the three layers, open the buddha knowledge and vision, and enter the bodhisattva stages. This is like Hīnayāna practice: before the sixteen mental states are fulfilled, one cannot be called [an attainer of] the first fruit; when the sixteen mental states are fulfilled, one is called a srotāpanna.
