From "If people have faith and take refuge in the Buddha" onward is the third [section], four and a half verses, which chants the aforementioned exhortation to have faith, corresponding to the aforementioned "You should believe what the Buddha says." Within the verse there are two [parts]: First, two and a half verses adduce the effect to exhort faith; second, from "Śāriputra" onward, two verses adduce the cause to exhort faith. Under adducing the effect, the initial one and a half verses adduce the inner mind: "If people have faith and take refuge in the Buddha, / The Tathāgata does not deceive them" clarifies that the Buddha's mind is pure; having severed the defilements of ignorance, stinginess, and all evils, he speaks from a pure mind, hence it is credible. "I adorn my body with the marks" onward, one verse, clarifies the external physical appearance. The physical marks are resplendent, the radiance and complexion dignified and refined; internally devoid of dark confusion and externally possessed of light, his mouth is free from deceit and revered by the assembly; when expounding the Mahāyāna seal, he can indeed be believed and accepted. "I originally made a vow" onward, two verses, adduces the cause to exhort faith; this also comprises two: First, "I originally made a vow" onward, one verse, adduces the past vow; second, "According to my past [vow]" onward, one verse, clarifies the fulfillment of the vow. My past vow was not only a self-vow for bodhi, but also a vow that sentient beings would enter the Buddha's wisdom together; expounding now to requite the vow, this is also credible. Now bodhi is already fulfilled and sentient beings have also entered; since you have personally realized the Buddha's wisdom, you also verify that my vow is not in vain, concluding the adducing of the cause to exhort faith.
