發起為二：一抑、二引，抑令憤勇，引令速進。「我先不言」下，指上明權皆為菩提，指上顯實皆為化菩薩者，若權若實，皆入佛道無住涅槃，上已明言，云何執教迷闇不解，如此責謂是抑文也。「然舍利弗今當」下，是引接安慰。前斥既切，恐鄙懟自沈，今許其譬喻更明此義，若能解者猶稱智也。

The initiation has two parts: first, repressing; second, guiding. Repressing causes them to be aroused and courageous; guiding causes them to advance swiftly. From "Did I not previously say" downwards, pointing to the above explanation that expedients are all for bodhi, and pointing to the above revelation of the real that all is for transforming bodhisattvas: whether expedient or real, all enter the Buddha path and non-abiding nirvāṇa. Having already clearly stated this above, why cling to the teaching and remain blindly confused without understanding? Such a rebuke is the text of repressing. From "However, Śāriputra, now you shall" downwards is the guiding and comforting. The previous reprimand having been severe, fearing they would sink into self-contempt and resentment, he now promises to clarify this principle further through a parable; if they can understand, it may still be called wisdom.
