From "At that time the poor son wandered through various hamlets" down: Third, the analogy of the son returning close to his father. This also has two parts: 1. seeking food and clothing; 2. arriving at the father's city. First, internal correlation: having regressed from the Mahāyāna, he fully suffered all miseries and deeply gave rise to disgust, wishing to seek escape; grasping the principle incorrectly, he fell into heterodoxy. Because heterodox wisdom exercises the mind, he can easily enter into the correct; taking the search for the supramundane as the cause for evoking the Buddha. Contemplating the five aggregates is the "hamlets"; the twelve sense bases are the "towns"; the eighteen elements are the "countries"; passing through these to seek the principle is called "seeking food and clothing." Second, from "and thereupon arrived at the city where his father dwelt" down: this is the direct heading toward it. "The city where his father dwelt": The realm of suffering serves as the capacity; evoking the Buddha's great compassion is called arriving at the city. The city is nirvāṇa; nirvāṇa extends to both the half and the full [teachings]. Sentient beings through practice and understanding can have the sense of attaining nirvāṇa, hence it says arriving at the city.
