From "Why is this?" onwards is the fourth [part], explaining the meaning of being near. "All bodhisattvas" explains all expedient causes. "Sambodhi" explains all expedient fruits. Expedient causes and expedient fruits are all subsumed under and belong to this sūtra, just as dry and moist earths all depend on water; hence it says "subsumed under and belong to". "Opening the gate of expedient means and demonstrating the mark of the real": Guangzhai says, "Formerly at the Deer Park, faculties were mixed, and the Tripiṭaka was extensively preached without making the one principle clear. At that time, the real was concealed by the expedient, and the one principle was blocked by the expedient teachings. Now at the Royal City, responding to great faculties, the real is revealed. Once the real is revealed, the former teachings are discarded. Because the former teachings are discarded, the gate of expedient means is opened; and once the one principle is manifested, the mark of the real is revealed." In my private view, this interpretation destroys the expedient rather than opens the expedient. Daolang of Hexi says, "Directly calling the three expedient is itself opening the gate of expedient means. Formerly, it was not said that the three are expedients, hence the gate of expedient means was closed; now calling the three expedients demonstrates that the one is the real." In my private view, this explanation accords with the text. Someone explains that opening the two expedients of teaching and body demonstrates the two reals of teaching and body; the buddhas of the three periods have only the expedient and the real in form and sound, and when opening and demonstrating are treated according to this, the twelve [divisions] and eighty-four thousand [dharma gates] become luminously clear. In my private view, the former two masters opened and demonstrated according to teaching, whereas the later person added body to it; this steals Longyin's meaning and makes it his own explanation, yet it remains the intention of destroying the expedient, not the meaning of opening.
