Next, explaining "lifespan" (shòuliàng): "Life" (shòu) means receiving. True suchness is not separated from all phenomena, and is therefore called receiving; furthermore, because objective realm and wisdom correspond, it is called receiving; furthermore, because the one-lifetime retribution of a hundred years is uninterrupted, it is called receiving. "Span" (liàng) means measuring and defining. The word "span" is general, without an exclusive reference; it measures and defines the Dharma Tathāgata taking the principle of suchness as life, the Reward Tathāgata taking wisdom as life, and the Response Tathāgata taking the shared conditions [with beings] as life, measuring and defining whether all lives have a measure, are measureless, or are neither measured nor measureless. Regarding the Dharma-body Tathāgata's life of the principle of suchness: whether buddhas exist or do not exist, the nature and characteristics are ever-so; it is not discussed in terms of correspondence and non-continuity, nor is there measured or measureless. The text says, "Neither like nor different, neither false nor real"; this is indeed measuring and defining the Dharma-body's life of the principle of suchness. Measuring and defining the Reward-body Tathāgata: matching the objective realm of suchness with the wisdom of suchness, the objective realm giving rise to wisdom is the reward, and wisdom merging with the objective realm is receiving. Since the objective realm is measureless and boundless, eternally abiding and unperishing, the wisdom is also like this, just as a large box has a large lid. The text says: "My power of wisdom is like this; obtained through long cultivation of karma, the light of wisdom shines measurelessly, and lifespan lasts countless kalpas." This is measuring and defining the Reward-body Tathāgata's life of wisdom. Measuring and defining the Response-body: the response body adapts to conditions; where conditions are long it is likewise long, and where conditions are short it is likewise short (and so forth). For that which is from others, what [impediment] is there to me? The text says: "Constantly manifesting birth, constantly manifesting extinction," or again speaking for itself with different names and differing ages, great and small; this is measuring and defining the Response Buddha's life that conforms to conditions.
