Furthermore, such diverse merits of the three bodies were all accomplished long ago beneath the tree of the site of awakening in the original time, which is called the origin; what was accomplished in the intermediate period and today at the site of awakening of quiescent extinction is called the traces. What all sūtras explain as origin and traces takes the Dharma and Reward bodies accomplished at the site of awakening of quiescent extinction as the origin, and the superior and inferior response bodies arising from the origin as the traces. What this sūtra elucidates takes the three bodies accomplished at the site of quiescence and in the intermediate period as all being traces, and takes the three bodies obtained long ago at the original site of awakening as the origin; therefore, it differs from all other sūtras. "Without the origin there is no way to manifest traces; without traces there is no way to reveal the origin. Though origin and traces are distinct, they are an inconceivable one." Master Sengzhao's words had their intention in the origin at the site of quiescence.
