Now, the contemplation of mind is also like this: every single mind possesses the king and factors. In order to accomplish contemplation, the king and factors support each other to attain awakening. One may enter the path through the factor of perception, or one may enter the path through the factor of desire; according to what is appropriate, the mind king and mental factors jointly attack it, transforming and capturing the minds of defilement to perform the Buddha's work. Cultivating this contemplation without having awakened, contemplative practice is like milk; if one gives rise to the undefiled, contemplative practice is like curd; if one shatters the sands of defilement, it is like raw and cooked ghee; if one shatters fundamental ignorance, contemplation is like clarified butter. When reaching clarified butter, the king and factors are both consummated; because the mind and mental factors no longer function, this is called practicing the perfection of wisdom. The Samantabhadra Contemplation states: 'Contemplating the mind, there is no mind; dharmas do not abide in dharmas. My own mind is naturally empty; sin and blessing have no master.' This non-mind and non-factors is precisely what is called correct contemplation. If these mental factors and defilements are not exhausted, the contemplation is not completed; therefore the sūtra says: 'If sentient beings are not saved, I shall not achieve supreme awakening.' This is precisely its meaning (and so forth).
