Regarding origin and traces, their original ground is difficult to fathom: they may dwell in virtual awakening or be equal to the Dharma King. As when Sudhana entered the Dharma realm and saw Mañjuśrī's physical forms to be boundless and his dharma gates profound and far-reaching: in origin he is adjacent to the buddhas, while in traces he assists Śākyamuni as a bodhisattva. Through the power of the samādhi of manifesting physical forms everywhere, he casts reflections and lowers his countenance, expounding broadly according to suitability through the inconceivable transformation of the wheel of speech; this may be grasped by the mind, but cannot be discriminated in words. Thus, his traces guide the four flavors to return to the One Real, just like the hammer and anvil shaping all raw materials; once clarified butter is accomplished, the conversion for a given period comes to rest. Yet their original ground has been fully accomplished; how could they only today have entered the Mahāyāna for the first time? Nor is it like the site of tranquil extinction where the high mountains are first illuminated; whether sudden or gradual, all are the doing of the traces.
