Furthermore, the Avataṃsaka, addressing the two [kinds of] bodhisattvas, preaches one of self and one of other; not being directed at the two vehicles, they neither heard nor understood it. The Tripiṭaka, addressing the two vehicles, preaches one of converting others; not being directed at bodhisattvas, it lacks one's own practice. The Vaipulya addresses both the small and the great: addressing the two vehicles, it preaches two of converting others; addressing bodhisattvas, it preaches one of self and one of other. The Prajñā also addresses three, preaching one of self and two of other: addressing the two vehicles it preaches one of other, and addressing bodhisattvas it preaches one of self and one of other. The Lotus universally addresses those whose capacities have ripened, elucidating only the one of self without further discussing other. The text states: 'When the bodhisattvas hear this Dharma, their nets of doubt are all removed. The twelve hundred arhats shall all likewise become buddhas.' All sentient beings enter the expedient of one's own practice, which is why it is called the 'Expedient Means Chapter' (and so forth).
