From this chapter onwards, ending at the nineteen lines of verse in the 'Distinction of Merits Chapter'—or up to the conclusion of the passage concerning the disciples of the four kinds of faith in the present after the verses—is termed the section of proper exposition. If divided into two proper expositions, from here down to the conclusion of the 'Conferring of Prophecy on Those in Training and Those Beyond Training Chapter' is the proper exposition of the trace gate. For now, following what is closest at hand, with respect to the proper exposition of the trace gate, it is further divided into two: first, from here downwards is the brief opening of the three and revealing of the one; second, from 'He addressed Śāriputra, "You have already been earnest..."' downwards is the broad opening of the three and revealing of the one.
