On lower stages, by means of a single voice one causes others to hear a single teaching; the Buddha, by means of a single voice, causes each to understand according to their kind. Now, the single cloud and single rain are precisely this single voice that accords with kind. Some explain that the non-duality of the dharmakāya is called 'single', and because the sound issues from the dharmakāya it is called 'single voice'. Some say that because all sounds are emitted simultaneously, it is called 'single voice'. Some say that among the five tones, he employs any single tone at will. The Mahāprajñāpāramitā-upadeśa explains that a single voice responds to many sounds, not that they are emitted simultaneously, nor that it is a sound issuing from the dharmakāya. The Vibhāṣā says that the Buddha preaches the Four Truths with a single voice: five people hear human speech, eighty thousand devas hear divine speech, and hell-beings and yakṣas each hear their own corresponding speech; its proclamation reaching up to the Brahmā heaven is the brahma-voice. It is also that the pure voice obtained by the Buddha as karmic reward is most sublime and styled the brahma-voice; if it were the brahma-voice obtained as karmic reward, then humans would not hear it, and even if they heard it, they would not understand it.
