Regarding the four practices of ease and joy, ancient teachers said: first, the two emptinesses of the provisional and real are the essence; second, preaching the Dharma is the essence; third, leaving behind faults is the essence; fourth, compassion is the essence. Master Ji said: first, emptiness; second, leaving behind arrogance; third, eliminating jealousy; fourth, great compassion. Master Long said: first, physically staying far from all evils and gradually drawing close to the principle of emptiness; second, eliminating verbal faults; third, eliminating mental jealousy; fourth, giving rise to compassion. Master Nanyue said: first, non-attached correct wisdom; second, not speaking of faults with the mouth; third, respecting superiors and welcoming inferiors; fourth, great compassion. Master Tiantai says: Cessation, contemplation, and compassion guide the three karmas and the vows. Because physical karma has cessation, one is free from the coarse physical karmas; because it has contemplation, one cannot apprehend the body, cannot apprehend physical karma, and cannot apprehend the ability to be free from it—because nothing is apprehended, one does not fall into [the state of] ordinary mortals; because it has compassion, one diligently cultivates physical karma to benefit all beings broadly and does not fall into the stage of the two vehicles. Because there is the practice of cessation, one puts on the robe of patience; because there is the practice of contemplation, one sits on the Tathāgata's seat; because there is compassion, one enters the Tathāgata's room. When the practice of cessation leaves behind faults, it accomplishes the virtue of severance; when the practice of contemplation is free from attachment, it accomplishes the virtue of wisdom; when compassion benefits others, it accomplishes the virtue of grace. The virtue of grace assists and accomplishes the virtue of wisdom, and the virtue of wisdom is able to penetrate the virtue of severance: this is called the practice of ease and joy of bodily karma. The remaining [three]—verbal, mental, and vows—are also like this.
