From "skillfully cultivating such [thoughts]" below is the approach of contemplation practice. Contemplating all phenomena as empty, free from attachment, the mind does not obstinately cling. Not opposing people's intentions and not contravening the characteristics of phenomena, one does not reply by expounding Hīnayāna dharmas. Regarding "only replying with the Mahāyāna": if one sees that there is no capacity for the great and expounds the small, one obtains the benefit of expedient means; but if one expounds the small without seeing that the capacity for the great is absent, one obstructs their conditions for the great. Since in both cases one fails to see, expounding only the great is without fault.
