Citing the Great Sūtra: the sūtra says, 'Ānanda is a man of vast hearing who naturally can understand permanence and impermanence.' This is because the meaning of permanence and impermanence is identical to self and non-self. The non-dual ascent to the stages jointly illumines prior to the stages; 'illumining' and 'distinguishing' are different names with identical meaning. Because the perfect teaching is ultimate, its meaning encompasses both provisional and real, subsuming the inferior with the superior. Therefore, when viewing an entire lifetime, since the five flavors differ, what is heard is not the same. 'The three Ānandas in the Saddharmasmṛtyupasthāna': they largely correspond to the three persons in the Compilation of the Dharma.
