Regarding 'the vinaya was divided into five divisions', during the one hundred years after the Buddha's parinirvāṇa, Upagupta upheld the Dharma, and the sentient beings he transformed did not argue right and wrong, but possessed only a single division of the Vinaya Piṭaka, namely the Eighty Recitations. One hundred years later, Upagupta had five disciples, each holding to a single view and unable to harmonize as one; thereupon they divided the single piṭaka into five differences, like breaking a gold staff without losing the use of gold. Dividing the text now is also like this: although it is divided into many sections, one knows that the great purport was originally one; contrasting what is divided with the origin, it says 'and so forth.'
