1.61

「又示教相者」，教家之相故云教相，五味分別為顯醍醐，通論聖言被下，俱名為教。今教別有顯實之功，故名為相。又別約三段示醍醐相，故名為相。故於三段各簡偏小，此且通作一種三段，讓下本迹，是故未分二種三段。

"Furthermore, indicating the characteristics of the teaching": these are the characteristics belonging to the teaching, hence called 'characteristics of the teaching.' The differentiation of the five flavors is for the sake of revealing ghee. Speaking generally, the sacred words addressing those below are all called 'teaching.' The present teaching uniquely possesses the function of revealing the real, hence it is called 'characteristics.' Furthermore, it specifically indicates the characteristics of ghee in terms of the three divisions, hence it is called 'characteristics.' Therefore, within the three divisions, each excludes the one-sided and the small. Here we provisionally treat it generally as one kind of three divisions, deferring to the origin and traces below; for this reason, the two kinds of three divisions are not yet distinguished.
