Eighth, regarding the claim that 'the joy of the assembly contradicts normal sentiment, because the "Entrustment" chapter causes the emanations to return while the stupa does not depart, and if "Entrustment" is not placed at the end of the sūtra, the asuras and others rejoiced too early, which would not be rejoicing at hearing the Dharma, but rather feeling comforted and joyful at seeing the guest buddhas leave, which is deeply bizarre': Refutation: Objecting that rejoicing at this point is too early—at the end of each of the three cycles [of preaching] there was joy, which was even earlier than this, so why not find that bizarre? When the 'Life Span' chapter finished being spoken, in 'Distinction of Merits' it says: 'Hearing of the buddha's immeasurable life span, everyone rejoiced.' Now origin and traces are both concluded; they also heard in 'Joyful Acceptance' that doing a little yields immense merit, also heard in 'Dharma Master' the profound efficacy of hearing and upholding [the sūtra], and also heard in 'Sadāparibhūta' the present and future benefits for the transformer and the transformed, making clear that the ways of propagating the sūtra have no fixed, unvarying forms; they also saw the World-Honoured One manifest the ten divine powers, bestow the four key essentials, pat their heads in entrustment, and they accepted it three times, bringing the great matter to completion—how could they not rejoice, and how could one say it was too early? One should know that such a person would not rejoice even by the end of the sūtra; how could he propagate the sūtra and cause others to rejoice? As for saying that they rejoiced that the guest buddhas were leaving, if one moves it to the later text so that the stupa's departure is also added to produce joy, that would be even more bizarre. This proves that all of these [objections] gauge the sagely with ordinary sentiments, merely piling up words, grasping a single detail to obscure the whole.
