10.88

弟子通初後，法師唯二三，義亦兼後二，或全未入品。何者？若以五品入六根中，五師但為六根因耳。縱以五品在六根外，五師不云修於觀行，但以誦說名通，且通第二三品，說復該於四五，故且一往似通。若具約位簡之，一向未入凡位，以法師名彼品釋廣，故須指彼以消今名。「法師」之稱既通，不隔四信五品，故指彼文用申品目。

Disciples run through the beginning and the end, whereas Dharma masters are only the second and third [stages]; in meaning they also combine the latter two, or have not entered the stages at all. Why? If the five stages are placed within the six sense faculties, the five masters are merely the cause for the six sense faculties. Even if the five stages are placed outside the six sense faculties, the five masters are not said to cultivate the practice of contemplation; merely because recitation and preaching are general names, they provisionally apply to the second and third stages, and preaching further covers the fourth and fifth; hence provisionally they seem to apply. If distinguished strictly according to stage, they have completely not yet entered the ordinary stages. Because the name 'Dharma master' was extensively explained in that chapter, one must point to that chapter to explain the present name. Since the designation 'Dharma master' is general and not blocked from the four faiths and five stages, that text is cited to express the chapter title.
