In explaining the background of “Kauṣṭhila,” although he is contrasted with Śāriputra to establish his virtue as an uncle, it is tentatively explained from the perspective of the uncle. The clan and family are the mundane; “seeing his sister” is the individual; from “leaving home” to “suffering defeat” is therapeutic; from “bowing his head” onward all belong to the ultimate truth. In the Madhyamāgama, fascicle fifty-eight, Śāriputra and Kauṣṭhila debate back and forth in many rounds. First, Śāriputra asked: “What is unwholesome? What are unwholesome roots?” Kauṣṭhila replied: “The body is unwholesome; greed and the like are unwholesome roots.” He asked: “What is wisdom?” He replied: “The four noble truths are.” He asked: “What is consciousness?” He replied: “That which knows forms, sounds, scents, tastes, tangible objects, and dharmas is.” He asked: “What does consciousness rely upon?” He replied: “It relies on life.” He asked: “What does life rely upon?” He replied: “It does not rely on anything else. Relying on life there is warmth, just as due to oil there is a lamp.” There are still many further rounds.
