Because conditions for conversion differ, none fail to benefit beings; because causes and conditions are interrelated, traces must be established together. Either one person relates to many, or many relate to one; or one relates to one, or many relate to many. Thus, from beginning to end, intimate and distant, host and companions, manifest and secret together bring to completion a single conversion. Furthermore, regarding the holy ones' contemplation practice, the subject of contemplation and object of contemplation in a single thought-moment encompass a whole lifetime; phenomenal and principle, provisional and real, person and dharma, host and companions, concealed and manifest, good and evil—all are subsumed by this mind-contemplation. Therefore, they must be clarified with reference to the king [citta] and its retinue [caitta].
