Next, the extensive [account of] the past further expands upon the previous two. As for "horizontal and vertical": regarding one another [in space] is horizontal; regarding the present and past [in time] is vertical. As for "common designations": because the nirmāṇakāya possesses all ten [epithets], they are called "common." In relation to the nirmāṇakāya, the dharmakāya can also be conceptually established [in this way]: "My present body is indeed the dharmakāya"; hence one knows that the titles of the nirmāṇakāya are indeed the titles of the dharmakāya. However, explaining the titles of the dharmakāya must be based on the Dharma, just as fully detailed in the second fascicle of the Notes on the Great Calming and Contemplation. Furthermore, across the sūtras sometimes three epithets are listed in common, which are the first three of the ten. Thus the Vimalakīrti says: "If I were to explain the meanings of these three phrases, kalpas would be exhausted without end"; by taking the three as a model for the seven, this should also be understood. If the titles of the nirmāṇakāya are inexhaustible, how much more so those of the dharmakāya! Specific titles are variable: as in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra, "The Buddha told Mahāmati: 'In this Sahā world, I have three asamṃkhyeyas of hundreds of thousands of names.'" It is also as in the Avataṃsaka, where in this four-continent world there are ten thousand names, in each of the worlds of the ten directions there are ten thousand names, and so forth up to the realms of all space across the ten directions, where they differ in manifold ways. Since this Buddha is like this, all buddhas are also so; since the buddhas' names are like this, the buddhas' bodies and preachings of the Dharma are also likewise. The merits of the ten epithets are as [told of] the Fragrant-Mouth Monk in the Aśokarāja Sūtra, and so forth.
