3.116

有二種：一者義意，施前諸味本為佛乘，故將令得以對元意；二者答意，問既具騰初後，答亦委述始終，不可唯守略文令闕大旨，故隨問勢從義離開，況此問答隨見而辨，信非二聖虛構言端，方荷今文釋者之巧。引過去無量劫遠事與東方萬八千孱同，驗舊消文未成答問。

There are two points: first, the intended meaning: bestowing the preceding flavors was fundamentally for the sake of the buddha vehicle, so "causing them to attain" is correlated with the original intent; second, the intent of the answer: since the question fully reiterated the beginning and end, the answer also thoroughly relates the start and finish, and one must not merely keep to the brief text and thereby lack the great purport; hence, following the momentum of the question, it is separated according to the meaning. Furthermore, this question and answer are discerned in accordance with what was seen, and one may believe that the two sages did not fabricate topics of speech in vain; only then can one appreciate the skill of the present text's commentator. Adducing a matter as distant as immeasurable kalpas in the past as being identical with the eighteen thousand [lands] in the east verifies that the old explanations of the text failed to constitute a proper question and answer.
