The clan name belongs to the ancestors, while the personal name derives from one's own virtues. Even if the clan names differ, this is not sufficient to be a discrepancy; if interpreted as meaning the same, this is not without reason. In nobility and erudition, the meaning is the same though the names differ. As in bringing the names together, could it be that ancient and modern [buddhas] were identically named Śākya? In speaking of 'capable of benevolence' (nengren), [it means] one whose faculties are sharp and swift and who does not go against the inclinations of living beings; thus the people of the country follow him as if flocking to a market. What he speaks is non-dual and completely satisfies the minds of the multitude; hence he is called 'Full Speech' (Mǎnyǔ). Therefore 'Full Speech' and the like are simply 'capable of benevolence'; the same also applies to the eight royal sons.
