Regarding the sūtra stating that 'each governed the four continents,' some say: A gold wheel[-turning king] certainly never encounters a buddha. This too is not so; things are not entirely uniform. Regarding 'generating the aspiration for the Great Vehicle,' this is simply the four universal vows. These voice-hearers had already generated them previously in the presence of the Buddha Mahābhijñājñānābhibhū; how much more so when gathered together could they still have the name of the Hinayāna? Although there are ten kinds of generating the mind in the Avataṃsaka, they do not go beyond the four universal vows, as fully clarified in detail in the first fascicle of the Great Calming and Contemplation. Regarding 'now having not yet revealed the traces' and so forth, one should also say 'opening the provisional.' Regarding 'revealing the origin,' this is spoken from the standpoint of manifesting traces.
