「問彌勒」等者，昔八十劫承稟妙光，雖不通利，安得不聞？今為補處宿智頗忘，何故而今猶生疑問？答意者，此依權道不從實行，實行雖即曾聞，何妨今仍猶豫。然憶昔曾聞法華會中得記等事，亦應憶昔曾見法華會前端相釋疑，故知實位補處輔應化佛，示歷五味亦且從權，是故文中從權以釋。

Regarding "Asking Maitreya," etc.: in the past, for eighty kalpas he received instructions from Prabhāpāla; though not thoroughly keen, how could he not have heard? Now, as the one who will succeed to the position, with his past wisdom considerably forgotten, why does he still give rise to questioning doubts at present? The intent of the answer is that this relies on the provisional path and does not follow the real practice. Although in terms of real practice he had already heard it, what prevents him from still hesitating now? However, if he recollected what he had heard in the past at the Lotus assembly regarding receiving predictions and so forth, he should also have recollected seeing the auspicious signs and the resolving of doubts before the Lotus assembly in the past. Therefore we know that in the real rank of succeeding to the position, assisting the response-manifested Buddha and displaying the progression through the five flavors are also temporarily following the provisional; therefore in the text it is explained according to the provisional.
