The four verses below 'I see' are not, as old interpretations had it, a concluding confirmation. They must praise the intent of the earlier passage determining the reply; for if one takes them as words of concluding confirmation, they become redundant, while the passage determining the reply would then be missing. How could one not take them as praising the determination of the reply? Regarding 'praising the text above on about to preach the Great Vehicle sūtra': it should also be called 'named the Lotus of the Wonderful Dharma'; the verse saying 'the Buddha shall rain down the Dharma rain' and so forth praises the Dharma for instructing bodhisattvas above. Thus we know that the six lines above merely clarify the reason for wishing to preach, admonishing the assembly to give rise to thirsty yearning. The verse saying 'all people seeking the three vehicles' and so forth praises the Buddha's protection and mindfulness above; because it is what the Buddha protects, it serves to sever doubts, coalescing seamlessly with the text above—how could it not praise what came before? If interpreted as severing and subduing doubts, the text is again marvelously identical. Severing the first meaning: the wonderful omen fundamentally indicates that the reward corresponds to the Dharma. Severing the second meaning: the omen being identical, the Dharma must be the true character. Severing the third meaning: those who reach this assembly all have no different quest. Severing the fourth meaning: the three doubts being eliminated, the merit lies with the Buddha. Regarding 'phenomena are exhausted' and so forth: 'phenomena are exhausted' refers to the three [matters] such as the name; 'principle is culminated' refers to the essence that is revealed. Phenomena and principle uniting into one, what further doubt could there be?
