Next, regarding the second [interpretation] in terms of that which expresses: if principle and teaching are viewed against each other, when discussed respectively each of the four teachings is nothing other than that which expresses. Now, looking at the three in relation to the one, the three serve to express the one real; thus the three are called that which expresses. That is to say, the teachings, practices, persons, and principles of the preceding three teachings are all that which expresses. Within this there are seven [parts]: First, directly establishing the three teachings as the gate; this is an explanation based on meaning and not on etymological gloss. Next, from "the gate is called" onward explains the meaning of a gate; like a gate in the mundane world whose original purpose is to allow passage through, because all three lead into the real, they are called gates. Third, from "skillful means" onward clarifies the purpose of the gate: sentient beings do not understand that it originally leads [to the real], and based on what they grasp at it serves as a preliminary lure, yet those who are not skilled in musical nuances take the prelude as mere play. Fourth, from "the real" onward clarifies the function of the gate: although it is not identical with what is entered, entering is attained through this. Fifth, from "deriving from that which [expresses]" onward clarifies the derivation of the name: the provisional and the real are still kept apart because the capacities of beings differ; hence the previous two interpretations, in terms of the explicit level and before the stages of the separate [teaching], are not the meaning of the present chapter. Sixth, the intent of citing scriptural proof is to clarify that the former gates only said they could lead through and must now be opened, which is why it says "opening the gate of skillful means," not that opening the gate had already been clarified there. Seventh, from "this meaning" onward concludes that [the former] is not it.
