Next, regarding the preface on raising the question, the beginning of the verse first investigates the presence or absence of verse text. First, from 'for what reason' downwards, there is a question; next, from 'Nāgārjuna' downwards, an answer. The treatise has ten meanings, but now only six are listed. The first five are the first five texts. Sixth is to cause later people to give rise to faith in the sūtra. Seventh is to interchange words and transform the manner of preaching the Dharma. Eighth is to show the inexhaustibility of meaning. Ninth is to clarify that the supreme person possesses unfixed preaching. Tenth is as in the present sixth text. In general discussion, it is an explanation by cause and condition: the first two are the mundane [siddhānta], the third and fifth are for individual persons, the fourth is the ultimate meaning, and from 'also for' downwards, the sixth is therapeutic, because it can remove later doubts. The remaining four texts are omitted: the sixth corresponds to for individual persons, the seventh corresponds to therapeutic, and the eighth and ninth correspond to the ultimate meaning; therefore, they are omitted and not discussed.
