“Taking the white urnā as the fundamental”: this is in terms of principle. The white urnā represents the middle and serves as the fundamental source of all dharmas; it is not necessarily the first, nor is it the fundamental merely because things are seen due to the light. Just as the six destinies stand at the head of the portents in other lands, how could they be the fundamental of the portents? Therefore other lands take the Buddha as the fundamental; if we discuss the general and the particular, they are still alike in relying on the light. Saying that “the Buddha is the fundamental” means that ordinary beings below rely on the Buddha, and the Buddha’s person and Dharma are from the Buddha from beginning to end; the beginning must return to the end.
