3.86

秖緣光宅法譬分張，法則本迹俱譚，譬唯迹門顯實，去法存譬良有以也。儻若全取，仍須責云譬本譬法，如何三譬唯譬得記，改小破惑二法，乃以本迹雙論用譬除法，良由斯也。

Just because Fayun of Guangzhai separated Dharma and metaphor: the Dharma discussed both origin and traces, while the metaphor exclusively revealed the real in the trace gate. Leaving out the Dharma while preserving the metaphor truly has its reason. If it were taken entirely, one would still have to rebuke him: ‘The metaphor exemplifies the fundamental, and the metaphor exemplifies the Dharma; why do the three metaphors only exemplify receiving prediction, while the two dharmas of transforming the small and destroying delusion discuss both origin and traces?’ Using the metaphor and eliminating the Dharma is truly due to this.
