The intent of the question is: before entering the abodes, they are called the three faculties; after these very three faculties enter the abodes, are they still called three or not? The intent of the answer is evident. The intent of the next question is: before the abodes it is called conditioning, and the first abode is called true; not having realized the second abode is also called conditioned cultivation. Since the conditioned cultivation before the abodes has gradations, does the state prior to the second abode also have gradations? The intent of the answer is: when the stage is identical and the principle is identical, there should be no further distinction; prior to the abodes, not yet having realized, it is plausible that there are differences. However, the state prior to the perfect abodes is also called 'conditioning' only here and in the Four Applications of Mindfulness, where the designation is still established with reference to the separate teaching.
