Regarding "A gate has three meanings": Among the three gates, leaving is distinctly a gate, while entering is established conceptually. Entering from one color-and-mind into another color-and-mind, a gate takes traversing as its meaning; it is merely that not yet having left is called "entering." Moving from one into another is called entering in meaning, but in reality it does not come from outside. Regarding "If taken as exiting": It must incorporate the Tripiṭaka [teaching]; now it establishes what is expressed by the pervasive teaching, because what is expressed by these two teachings is identical. As for the statement "If it is the distinct meaning": It relies upon a person of distinct principle. As for "what is expressed": The intention is to show that the meaning of a gate cannot be established by teaching alone. Although the sūtra speaks of teaching, it must correspond to principle; therefore, we know that although the distinct teaching expresses distinct principle, it is still not the cart gate—it is merely established as "distinct" in contrast to the pervasive and Tripiṭaka [teachings]. Because it conditions distinct principle, it is called distinct. At the beginning of the sequence, along with persons of the Tripiṭaka and pervasive [teachings], they all leave the burning house; in terms of their exiting the house being the same, it can still be called pervasive. Their initial realization also coincides with the nirvāṇa of the two teachings, so it can also be said that they attain the bliss of nirvāṇa. The three virtues are detailed as explained under the three dharmas in the text of the *Profound Meaning* and in the revelation of the essence in the third fascicle of *Great Calming and Contemplation*. Regarding "This explanation is slightly different from the previous one": Previously it said that the intent was not in the three; now it says that he fundamentally wished to bestow the great. Although there is a slight distinction, the names differ while the meaning is the same.
