"The efficacy and function in curing disease are superior": if we divide the two characters "yào" (medicinal) and "cǎo" (grass), then the small grass exclusively receives the name "grass," while the rest are generally called "medicinal," which refers to the undefiled. For now, speaking from the perspective of the persons of the two vehicles being described, they are the intermediate grass; hence the lower grass is said to be weak in its power to cure disease, and the superior grass, being identical to ordinary beings, is also inferior in curing disease. Because they give rise to the great aspiration, they are also called "medicinal." The two trees again take shading and sheltering as their efficacy. Therefore we know that while the general title specifically rests on the intermediate grass, in general discussion all are medicinal, merely omitting the character "tree." This can be seen in full in the distinctions at the beginning of the chapter.
"Trunk and stem" is the Dharma-body.
"Covering and shade" is loving-kindness and compassion.
"Utensils and implements" is benefiting beings.
"Illustrating the two bodhisattvas": in comparison to the two vehicles of the two teachings and the bodhisattvas of the Tripiṭaka [teaching], the bodhisattvas of the shared and distinct [teachings] are for the time being called "great." However, when the bodhisattva of the shared [teaching] is compared to the Tripiṭaka [teaching], although the realms of their universal vows have no superiority or inferiority, because the bodhisattva of the shared [teaching], first, enters the Mahāyāna to connect to the perfect and, second, connects to the distinct, it is called "broad."
"Seven good dharmas" are just the seven skillful means. If viewed from the perspective of practice, they are named from their intrinsic essence; if viewed from skillful advancement, their designations are established from their functions.
