Regarding "explaining the intention of the recount": having just rebuked his understanding as not having reached [the full extent], how could he arrive here and say that what he understood is exceedingly rare? Hence one knows that the preceding text was merely the Tathāgata recounting his own ability to know; what did it have to do with Kāśyapa? Therefore it is now explained: although the World-Honoured One was recounting his own [knowledge], in principle it is fitting that Kāśyapa understood it all; since Kāśyapa personally understood from beginning to end, and also traversed the provisional and real of the five periods, its meaning implicitly contains everything; hence he also deserves praise as exceedingly rare. However, Zhāng’ān's re-explanation merely treats it as recounting the thirteen verses of the previous chapter praising the Buddha's deep kindness; this is precisely being able to know what is appropriate within one's own realm, where the phenomena and principle of one's own realm completely encompass everything.
